Nostalgia Is Big Business For Clothing Company
Times change and memories fade, but nostalgia for the past is forever.
Retro style is coming back -; from automobiles and home furnishings to sports equipment and consumer electronics. But nowhere is this more apparent than in clothing.
Vintage clothing sites are popping up all over the Web, and thrift stores are all the rage. Incorporating vintage pieces into the modern wardrobe has become the latest fad as parents and kids of all ages make a grab for days gone by.
Denim Apparel Group, a publicly traded company, bet heavily on that enthusiasm when it recently acquired retro-vintage sportswear company Moonlight Graham, named for a rightfielder who played one game in the majors for the now-defunct New York Giants.
The California-based company has rights to the movies “Field of Dreams” and “Animal House,” car company General Motors, Major League Baseball, and beverage giant Cadbury Schwepps, as well as Kellogg’s and other retro Americana.
Founder and president Bart Silberman has Moonlight Graham poised to become an arbiter of cool, with designs and fabrics that set the company apart from other casual sportswear.
“You don’t have to be a fan of the New York Mets, Dr Pepper, a 1970 Chevelle SS, Budweiser or the Talking Heads to appreciate what we do,” Silberman said.
“Our artwork and quality tend to cross over. Of course it appeals to the hardcore fans out there, but a large amount of our business is done solely on the basis of cool art.”
Firmly entrenched in its Melrose location, Moonlight Graham is now exploring new retail locations. Prospects include Armitage Avenue in Chicago’s Lincoln Park, Sawgrass Mills in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.,
Thompson Street in New York near New York University and Boston’s Newbury Street shopping district.
Keys To Starting Your Own Clothing Company
Ever wanted to start your own clothing company? Its not as difficult as you think. What do you absolutely need?
1. A decent logo
2. Creative concepts and graphics – Design Talent
3. A unique, blank apparel supplier
4. A decent screen printer
5. A Line Sheet to show potential buyers
6. Sales and promotional talent.
Which do you think is most important? Its obviously design talent you say? Are you Joking? You must be joking. Have you stepped out of the house recently? Have you seen Von Dutch clothing?
Crayon weilding Chimpanzes produce better designs. Furthermore, I imagine the monkeys are more sanitary, but I digress.
#6 is clearly the most important element. You can create an entire line of fashion forward, beautiful clothing but if you can’t pitch it – no one will ever see it (excluding your mom of course). So, unless you want a closet full of your fantastic designs, ask yourself the following two questions:
Can I sell?
In other words……can I hit the pavement with my line sheet and walk into every boutique clothing store I can find? Then will I harass the hell out of retail clothing store buyers so that they’ll try to squeeze 5 minutes of time in for me at Magic 06′ (Clothing Convention) ?
Will I be able to make a professional presentation to a Nordstroms buyer?
Can I promote?
Do I have and creative viral or gureilla marketing ideas to get this label kickstarted?
If the answer to both of these questions is No – you better get some help. Namely, find someone passionate for fashion who also happens to be ridiculously outgoing, great on the phone and aggressive as hell.
Lastly, (and superficially) it would help if your sales rep is hot.
I know, how horrible…..so sorry, buy I didn’t say anything about this being an equal opportunity business.
That being said, let me welcome you the shallow end of the pool….. i.e. the fashion world.
Good luck with your label!
In the retail market, small changes can make or break you
Retail strategy, in fact, encompasses almost every aspect of running and operating a store. When the market was good, you could afford to let little things slide.
You could put off updating your retail displays, for example, or not use cutting-edge advertisements. It didn’t matter – there were so many customers that everyone was getting enough business to stay afloat.
Nowadays, however, people are much more careful with their money. Using the most effective and the most cost-effective retail strategies is crucial.
Selling retail clothing, I am hit pretty hard by changes in day to day, month to month, and year to year market conditions. I am completely ruthless with my retail strategies – I do everything that I can.
Even things that seem to not do much good, such as sending out e-mail marketing newsletters, still help secure customer now and then. An even better idea is to shift from giving out discount coupons to selling inexpensive membership cards.
Usually, a shopper will be willing to pay a couple dollars to buy a membership to your retail store. Once they do, they will feel brand loyalty – they will want to get the most use they can out of their membership.
Retail display setup is also an important aspect of good retail strategy. Product placement is everything. Put smart, sensible, down to earth products where smart, sensible, down to earth customers are likely to look.
Have your “impulse buys”Where people are likely to be impulsive. This is why so many stores have apparently sloppy retail displays on the counter.
If they make them look sloppy, impulsive, and last minute, people are likely to make sloppy, impulsive, last-minute decisions about them. People buy cute little items from these cases all the time.
When it all gets down to it, although marketing and advertising change from year to year, retail strategies are still about human psychology.
If you have a good location, capitalize on it. If you don’t have a good location, go to great pains to emphasize that people willing to put a little more effort into their shopping will get better results.
Your retail strategies should make your customers feel special for shopping with you. Then they will come back again!
Go Online To Make Dollars Stretch
In a tight economy, it becomes increasingly difficult to manage money. However, everyone can save, as long as they are willing to invest time and energy.
In order to make your dollars stretch as far as they can possibly go, one must be open to innovative money-savings ideas.
One amazing way to save money is to stop going to your local mall. Instead, choose to sit in the comfort of your own home and log on to the World Wide Web.
Online shopping, or virtual shopping, is not only a time-saver, but a money saver as well. In order to successfully online shop, you will need access to a credit or debit card.
Alternatively, some websites do allow customers to pay via automatic bank account deductions.
A word to the wise: make sure that you have money in your account! If you have insufficient funds, you may be liable for monetary penalties from both your bank and the retail facility.
After establishing a reliable mode of payment, you will need to identify your budget and shopping goals. Please note that online shopping exists in nearly every facet of the consumer market.
Virtual shops enable customers to purchase groceries, clothing, electronics, office supplies, luxury items and even cars with the click of a button!
When you know what you want to buy, you will be ready to immerse yourself in the world of online shopping. A great place to begin your virtual shopping is to look at the web pages of your favorite shops.
Countless retail companies have embraced the virtual market. Those businesses offer accompanying websites.
When you have located a suitable shopping outlet, you should verify its legitimacy. Be careful and overly cautious. Check for seals of approval from the Better Business Bureau. Alternatively, check the accuracy of trademark logos.
Retailers may offer discounts on their websites. Oftentimes, these savings are only accessible online. Savings may be identified through store prompts or coupon codes.
In fact, the next time you shop in a physical store, you should scrutinize your receipt. Sometimes, companies post surveys on the receipt.
When you complete the online survey, you may earn a ‘thank you coupon.’ Old Navy frequently utilizes this marketing strategy in order to obtain customer feedback.
When shopping at your favorite brick and mortar stores, sign up for their mailing list. Check if these stores offer online savings. This tip also applies to luxury item stores.
Jewelers such as Zales and Helzberg occasionally offer secret sales to their cleitele. High-end jewelry items such as diamonds, pearls and estate jewelry may be found with discounts between 20-45% off the traditional retail price.
Online savings do exist. It is simply up to the customer to look for these savings and take advantage of retail opportunities.
Virtual Retail Boom Creates Unique Shipping Challenges
Who could have predicted that online buying and selling would become the giant international business that it is today?
Everything from electronics, cars, clothing, collectibles, sporting goods, toys, antiques, books -; you name it -; can be found at online auction sites like eBay. According to the online auction giant, eBay is the most popular shopping destination on the Internet.
Why are online auctions all the rage? From collectible toy trains to custom-built furniture, you can find a variety of extraordinary items not found at your local mall.
And for those putting their large, bulky or fragile goods up for bids, selling is easy compared to figuring out how to get the items shipped to their new owners.
Seeking solutions to these and other shipping hassles, many online auctioneers are turning to professional packing, crating and shipping services, such as Pak Mail Centers. They can ship anything, anywhere in the world.
Pak Mail can handle any shipping challenge, according to the company. From items both small and precious, to entire truckloads, your items will arrive at their destinations in one piece and on time.
There is also an extended menu of services, including custom-built, wooden shipping crates for bulky and valuable items.
Items that have been successfully shipped include an antique Japanese sword, an elephant skeleton and even artificial limbs.
Pick-up service is available at most locations. Pak Mail can also provide estimated shipping costs, which allows an online seller to know ahead of time how much cost to factor in for shipping when listing an item for auction.
Buying Wholesale The Right Way (And The Wrong Way)
Buying Wholesale The Right Way
By now, if you’ve been on the Internet for just a little while (and I was a late-bloomer), starting in 1997, you know the land mines.
Not everything that is advertised is what it claims to be. That can be from products to services.
I didn’t start out to be in wholesale, in fact, I didn’t start out to have anything to do with the Internet at all. I was a cartoonist (still am), and founder of Londons Times Cartoons.
That launch was in 1997 in a small Mississippi warehouse that I used as my studio as I could not afford much more and launch the cartoons without a full time job. I took odd jobs as I continued this creative venture.
A Google of Londons Times Cartoons has hundreds of articles, reviews, etc. and even the real story of how we got started We’ve been at it a long time and are top-rated (bragging rights here) on Alexa.com and Netcraft.com.
It was not until 1995 that I realized I also had a business as I was getting emails from webmasters, newsletter publishers, etc. asking to buy the rights to my images. That was my start.
Then I was approached by a manufacturer wanting to create my merchadise from tee shirts to
wall clocks. We struck a deal for both retail and wholesale.
My attorney, a very precise man who dots every “I” and crosses every “T” made sure it was written out to where we both benefited equally.
Then the manufacturer revealed he really didn’t understand the wholesale business. Being a back-to-college adult student at a very good university, and having worked in wholesale many years growing up, I volunteered to teach him. He had no interest.
Then started my hunt. Who could manufacture and wholesale my now top-rated cartoons onto products and do so meticulously, at affordable prices, and keep the word of a contract? It took another year and I found a company in Denver that was well-funded. I asked to see samples and they were expedited two day delivery. They were perfect.
They were not silk-screened but directly digitally transferred which makes them look like part of the product, not an iron on decal. Perfect! Now to find out about customer service, guarantees, etc. All there. I signed up. A year has gone by and things
worked out very well.
The secret to this business is not so much knowledge (though of course knowledge IS power) so read all you can, but persistence. There are some good wholesalers out there. I sell from my a little shop that I set up on the net.
My products show the suggested retail price on them but then inside,
after clicking on the product is another hyperlink that says pricing and shows the wholesale table.
I set up a real business plan and went to work. I consulted with my business professors and other wholesalers who I knew had been in the business a long time.
Rick Londonwear was born, the first line of “designer” cartoon clothing for men, women and children. We also make other cartoon products such as mousepads, coasters, cutting boards, tote bags, and all sorts of other funny items bearing our copyrighted cartoon image.
Things worked out perfectly, the service is great, I was able to keep the prices way below the competition, and my cartoon team ten years later still creates the best cartoons on the Internet (so say the critics) which appear on the merchandise.
I have a staff of twenty three, I sell to Ebay merchants, brick and mortar store owners, e-store owners, and traveling salespersons. Whomever wants to turn a very good profit on very hot items, they come to me. I love the business.
I make it very easy for the buyer. I accept all major credit cards, Paypal, checks and money orders. We drop-ship on any pre-paid order or directly to you.
We don’t gauge on shipping, what it costs is what we charge; same cost to Canada and ship worldwide. Generally 2-3 day USPS Priority. Everything works out. I don’t know how but it does.
We made our mistakes. That is how we learned and became established. We still make a few, but they are few and far between and when we do, we make it right immediately.
That is the kind of company you want to deal with. I hate to brag but it is. Someone who has “seen it all” on the Internet and knows the land mines and will help you through them.
It doesn’t have to be us, we might not even offer the niche product that excites you. But whomever it is, make sure they have experience, are established, have references, and can make it happen for you. If you make money (they/we) do too!
